I write about AI companion apps: what each one is built for, what it remembers, and what it asks you to give up to get there. Most of the coverage in this category is an ad with a star rating stapled on. I try to do the other thing. I read the product, the privacy note, and the paywall, then say who the app is actually for.

People use these apps when they want company without the risk of a real person, and the companies selling them are racing to make that feel less like software. I am interested in that gap: the memory features, the pictures, the privacy claims, and the moment a free chat turns into a subscription. I do not think an app is a relationship. I do think the differences between them are real, and worth spelling out before someone pays.
